Dyson staat bekend om innovatie. Het Britse merk heeft de stofzuigerindustrie getransformeerd, de haardroger opnieuw uitgevonden en nu richten ze hun pijlen op… audio? Met de introductie van de Dyson Zone, een combinatie van een noise-cancelling koptelefoon en luchtzuiverend masker, zet Dyson een gewaagde stap buiten hun traditionele markt. Maar was het slim om dit product onder het Dyson-merk te lanceren?
Dit brengt ons bij een cruciale brandingvraag: wanneer kies je voor een Branded House en wanneer voor een House of Brands?

Waarom een Branded House niet altijd de beste keuze is.

Dyson kiest steevast voor een Branded House-strategie, waarbij alle producten onder de Dyson-naam vallen. Dit versterkt het merk door elke innovatie te linken aan hun kernwaarden: technologie, design en probleemoplossing. Andere bedrijven, zoals Philips, hanteren een soortgelijke aanpak en brengen alles uit onder hun hoofdmerk.
Daartegenover staat de House of Brands-strategie, waarbij bedrijven aparte merken creëren voor verschillende productcategorieën. Denk aan Procter &amp; Gamble met Gillette, Ariel en Oral-B, of Unilever met Dove en Axe. Dit laat toe om gerichtere marketing te voeren en het risico van een mislukking te beperken.

Branded House vs. House of Brands: Een strategische keuze

Door een submerk te creëren – zoals Apple deed met Beats by Dre – had Dyson een aparte positionering kunnen maken zonder het hoofdmerk te belasten.

Had Dyson een apart merk moeten creëren?

This brings us to a crucial branding question: when should you opt for a Branded House, and when is a House of Brands the better choice?

Why a Branded House isn’t always the best choice

Dyson consistently follows a Branded House strategy, where all products are launched under the Dyson name. This approach strengthens the brand by linking every innovation to its core values: technology, design, and problem-solving. Other companies, like Philips, adopt a similar strategy, ensuring all their products remain under their main brand umbrella.
On the other hand, a House of Brands strategy creates distinct brands for different product categories. Think of Procter &amp; Gamble with Gillette, Ariel, and Oral-B, or Unilever with Dove and Axe. This approach allows for more targeted marketing and helps mitigate risk—if one product fails, it doesn’t impact the entire brand portfolio.

However, this strategy is not without its risks.

Why Dyson Sticks to a Branded House

The Dyson Zone has sparked mixed reactions. On one hand, it&#8217;s an innovative move into personal air purification; on the other, it raises a fundamental question: does a headphone truly fit within Dyson’s core expertise?
The risks of a Branded House approach in this case:
<ul>
<li>Brand Confusion – Vacuum cleaners and headphones have little in common. Will consumers associate Dyson with audio?</li>
<li>Credibility – Airblade hand dryers and Airwrap hair dryers align with Dyson’s airflow technology. But audio engineering is a completely different field.</li>
<li data-start="341" data-end="725">Reputation Risk – If the product flops, it could damage Dyson’s overall brand perception.</li>
</ul>
By creating a sub-brand, like Apple did with Beats by Dre, Dyson could have positioned the product independently—without risking the reputation of its core brand.

Should Dyson have created a separate Brand?

A House of Brands approach is often the better choice in specific scenarios, such as:

Would Dyson have been better off launching Zone as a separate brand? Time will tell.

When should a company create a separate Brand?

Dyson remains a pioneering brand, constantly pushing boundaries. But whether the Dyson Zone will succeed depends on how well consumers associate the brand with audio.
Sometimes, keeping everything under one strong brand makes sense. But in this case, a separate sub-brand might have been the safer bet, allowing for clearer positioning and reducing potential brand dilution.
